Mission trail conditions: December 2007

The trails on Bear and Red Mountains in Mission usually have a dump of snow on them at this time of the year but, as of yesterday, things were pretty decent. If you’re out on either of the two mountains, feel free to post up trail conditions using the comment boxes below this entry.

Red Mountain

There was a skim coat of snow at the base of the hill with about 10cm near the trailhead. We didn’t ride the xc course.

Arduum. The trail is in decent shape. There are a few mucky areas left over from the race, but lots of water mitigation work has been done since then. If you’re familiar with the trail, keep your eye out for a couple of new features — they’re definitely not something you’d want to hit without a preview!

Bear Mtn is full of snow right now which isn’t so bad, BUT, THERE IS A TON OF DEAD FALL on the trail and the road up (Saunders). The trail is unrideable right now until it gets cleaned up.I only had a hand saw with me so I will get up there with a chainsaw in the next couple of weeks when the snow has gone away a bit more. I imagine the conditions will be the same up on RED. Luckily for us we have other great venues to go and play in!!!
Will post when I am going up to do this but it will probably be on short notice.
Cheers!!

SICK. All trails are running great on both Red and Bear. Todd K has been out on Bear fine tuning for the race every chance he gets.

Rode Red Mtn yesterday morning.

Crazy 8’s is much improved and the approach is now all rideable. Kudos to those who gave it the love!

The XC course, with Momentum, is in awesome shape, though someone has removed most of the signage that was there. It seems like they are gearing up for more logging in the vicinity. There are trees marked at the Momentum trailhead and the access road has been re-graded. Does anyone have any info regarding upcoming logging on Red?

Also, an old guy suggested they are extending the quarry on Bear which will consume the DH trail. Any credence to this? Cheers!

Do you mean the signs from this year and last year’s race? I removed them.

I suspect that “old guy” might be the same old guy that made a stack of false claims about water access and garbage after the race. He seems to have it in for the race.

Look at a map.. if the quarry extends far enough North, it will have to consume the pond before it consumes the trail, so it’s very likely not to extend that way. Alternately, if it extends East, it would have to climb almost 100 meters straight up before it hits the trail.

So… I don’t think so.

This particular ‘old guy’ was filling a large green cistern on a trailer with water, if that offers any clues. He had a litany of complaints, that is for sure.

What about the indications of impending logging on Red Mtn? Are there plans to log out Arduum? Momentum?

Not sure, but keep your eye on the woodlot thread. Logging is about to start there.

No logging plans that I know of. Those flags aren’t logging markers.
