March 6 2011, Heritage Park Toonie Race Recap

The first ever toonie race organized by the FVMBA has been officially deemed a success!

*RESULTS AND PIC COLLECTION ARE AT THE END OF THE PAGE*

Mission Heritage Park saw 62 riders compete over two laps of the Crown Land directly to the East of the park itself. The weather gods smiled on us and the sun shone all day and made the completely snow free trails fast and slick in more than a few places. The big story here is almost everyone had smiles on their faces and were out riding their bikes with attitudes in check. FUN! was the focus and by all accounts it was achieved.

The primary race organizer, Matt Scott, an Abbotsford FVMBA rep and Race Commitee member made it a point to have the race start on time and he met his goal. The race started just after 10am on this sunny Sunday and the rewards and BBQ were wrapped up by 1pm.

Top 3 men: 1st Arthur Gaillot, 2nd Nicholas Berry, 3rd Carsten Ivany

The planning is already starting for the next race at Sumas April 3rd. The format is different for the next race, it will be a Super-D, where you will start with a short 10 minute climb and then descend singletrack.

One issue that came up today was our little BBQ`s couldn`t pump out the burgers fast enough! This will be remedied for the next race! Thanks everyone for your patience today and we hope to see you at the next one.

This was announced very last minute, however all volunteers, in addition to getting a free burger and drink also collect points for the overall series. Three points will go to every volunteer for helping out at these races. Without the vollies; the racing doesn`t happen!

Also a big thanks goes out to the racers! The FVMBA is extremely pleased with the turnout and all the smiling faces.

Last but definitely not least the race sponsors included Wenting`s Cycle, LifeCycles, Cranky`s Bike Shop, Jack`s Cycle, Pinkbike.com, Avenue Body Shop and Kintec Foot Labs. Thanks for the great prizes!

Thanks for supporting the FVMBA!

    Hey Matt,

Awesome race. Great photos too. Sumas should be another cool venue.

One surprise for me was the outstanding number of competitive racers out for the day. Looks like FVMBA is attracting some strong riders to their races. Sumas will be another great test.

PS. You’re welcome to borrow my trailer again any time…do I get any vollie points for that?! :o

  3. Karen Rodgers says:

    Hey Matt

    Great day…so well organized…so fun…thanks !!!

I may not have filled out the form correctly regarding one bike for the full series…for me the one bike to rule them all will be my Giant Anthem…whoo hoo

About half the racers filled in the “one bike to rule them all” category. Seeing only those who raced Mission are now eligible for this special prize, we will give everyone that missed out on registering their bike into this category a second chance at the next race. So no worries Karen. Im glade you enjoyed the race.

  4. matt says:

I have just realized an oversight that will be corrected by the next race. Open Women will be categorized and ranked in the Overall Series apart from Open Men. Sorry for the confusion.

  5. matt says:

Definately a great turn out. I was amazed with over a third of the racers being women! A big thanks to everyone who come out to race.

To keep interest going for the whole Series, Kintec and Pinkbike will have special prizes for both male and female racers who have raced every race in the Series. So make sure to come out to he next race, a Super D/AM race on Sumas, April 3rd. Expect the course map to be released in a week or so.

Also to note, if you can’t race but want to help out, we are always looking for volunteers/course marshalls. Anyone who volunteers will recieve 3pts toward the Overall Series points structure. The Bear Mountain Challange has been a huge supporter of the FVMBA Toonie Series as well. So to give back, FVMBA will reward anyone who signs up to volunteer at the Bear Mountain race. 10pts will go towards your FVMBA AM Toonie Race Series overall pts!
