One of the oldest trails around the Clayburn area is the Soft Taco.
Steep, windy and trailsy, with clay and peat all around. Woodpeckers enjoying the dead trees, a young eagle heard more than seen. Giant cedar stumps, moss hanging surreally birds everywhere, very pretty.
A new bridge is being made midpoint which will be much better. All cedar construction wide and soon to be meshed as well. Duck a very steep section will be getting a ladder fitted into the rut. This will really help with the traction. Lots of money is being spent on galvanized spiral spikes, mesh, tools on this bridge as other trails.
Like the Lost Oakley lots of upgrades and maintenance going on.
FVMBA is committed to the trails more and better, your membership dues at work for all of us.
NOV14th Sumas mtn GIS map work has started, (it should be done this week) as we work towards sanctioning our trails .
Here’s a link to pixs of the bridge:

On Thursday we (the FVMBA) had another meeting with the City of Abbotsford re: Ledgeview and MTB. Present were Andrew gower, Gary Harder (FVMBA President), Michael McAllister (the City's Lawyer), Gary Guthrie (the City Manager), Don Luymes (Manager of Community Planning - also the guy who is doing ALL of the develpment planning for McKee Peak/Ledgeview), Ron Myers - Parks Planner/Manager and Lynne Harris - Councillor. The big topic of discussion was the risk supporting a MTB facility puts on the city and how it can be mitigated. Michael went through his points, and what the city will have to do to keep their insurers happy. Basically, the following:
- Clear signage on all trails - including difficulty rating.
- Regular inspections of trails - this will be done with the assistance of the FVMBA.
- “Safetying” of trails - ya, some stunts will have to go.
- Mandatory helmet rules (I’ve only ever seen 2 guys with no helmets on Ledgeview)
We also discussed getting the City involved with helping us get a deal with the landowners on Ledgeview - no decision to intervene directly was made, but they are going to help us out a little. Unfortunately, given the delicate situation, there isn’t much they can do (and we aren’t in too big a position to ask as it is all private land).
Finally - given that some of the trails are already on City land - they are going to be “taken over”. What does that mean? Well, for one, hopefully some $$ for maintenance. Signs will appear on the lower sections of SOB and LeBiteme - and Lost Oakleys and Soft Taco will also be signed. These trails will also be inspected and “safetyed”. Don’t worry - they will still be challenging - the biggest thing we will have to provide is “go arounds” at all stunts - and any bridging that sucks will have to be replaced.
So - things are looking up for MTB in Abby - and the City is gonna help out!!! (we even talked about jump/skills parks - so keep your eyes open!)

A wrecked car appeared a couple of years ago on the main access road and has slowly been working its way down the hill, deteriorating and shedding parts.
It’s time to do something about it.
Bring some gloves, and we will push, pull and drag that hulk out of there. We’ve arranged for a flat bed scrapper to take it away after it arrives at the bottom.
Come give something back to this playground we call Ledgeview.
Meet at the North Entrance by the golf course.

As most of you will now know, the area known as Ledgeview (formally called McKee Peak) is going to be developed into mostly single family home residential sub-divisions! But don’t fret - there is hope!
The City of Abbotsford has stated that a major “destination” park will be a part of this development, centered around the peak and that at the moment 80 hectares of forested land will remain in total (but not just in the park). What hasn't been determined is the exact configuration of this land and whether or not Mountain Bike trails will be included.
Well, here’s where you come in. The FVMBA believes that bike trails can and should be included in this new park - but we need your help to convince the Mayor and council of this. So, please take five mintutes to send a short, concise and polite e-mail to the mayor and council telling them that you want to see the Ledgeview trails survive in some form when the development is complete. Here are the addresses:
The Mayor
mreeves@abbotsford.ca
mayorsoffice@abbotsford.ca
The Council
bbb1771@shawbiz.ca
efast@abbotsford.ca
simongibson@shaw.ca
moegill@abbotsford.ca
lharris@abbotsford.ca
gpeary@abbotsford.ca
pross@abbotsford.ca
Tell them who you are and why you think the forest should be saved and why mountain bike trails are important. You may want to mention that the city has allowed both an indoor and outdoor BMX track, has built 2 skate parks and pays lots for swimming pools and sports fields but has done NOTHING for mountain biking. MAKE SOME NOISE and save Ledgeview. If you really want to get involved, PM me or e-mail me (Andrew) at rewogar@yahoo.ca.

We are going to need 10 to 12 people to come out on Saturday, February 26th at noon to the Lost Oakleys trail to repair the bridge. It was washed down-stream earlier this spring, and we need to place it back in the right spot and re-attach it. The bonus is you have to ride the entire trail to get to the bridge! The trail starts on McKee road on the Western edge of Ledgeview Golf Course.
Hope to see you there!

On Wednesday, 9 February there is a Ledgeview (McKee Peak) planning committee open house between 7pm and 9pm at City Hall.
We need all the mountain bikers we can to advocate on behalf of this great trail system. This meeting is a great opportunity to ask questions and introduce ideas to those involved in the decision making process.
