Annual Vedder Mountain Trail Cleanup & Maintenance Day

For those wanting to earn tons of good Karma, mark Sunday April 26 on your calendar for the “Annual Vedder Mountain Trail Cleanup and Maintenance Day”. This event has been going off for many years now and is an essential part of our efforts to keep our riding area healthy. Each year we remove 5-7 tonnes of garbage and recyclables that are illegally dumped on the Vedder Mountain roadways, parking areas, trail heads and trails. The second half of the day will be dedicated to trail buffing and maintenance. Without this effort our playground would be a junkyard and no fun to ride. Every year there is a ton of free food and Swag provided and if you were there last year, you know that everyone got something good to go home with. In addition, anyone attending this year will be able to get your brand new Vedder Mountain Trails Association (VMTA) Member stickers for $10 instead of the normal $20 price and support our work towards legalizing and permanently protecting all of our trails through ongoing negotiation with the government and Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts. Contact myself by email (via the Contacts page at VMTA.ca) or by phone (604-793-5265) or Rob at Jack Cycle (604-858-3011) to sign up. See VMTA.ca for more deets. The skinny:
9:30 am, Sunday April 26 (lunch at 12, wrap-up around 3pm)
• Meet at the mountain bike parking area (first “Y” up Parmenter Road)
• Bring gloves, big plastic bucket (maybe a shovel or rake, but these may be provided)

LEDGEVIEW CLEAN UP DAY - Oct 5th, 2008

LEDGEVIEW CLEAN UP DAY
This sunday Oct 5th
9:00 AM

Cutting back the overgrowth, cleaning debris - generally polishing the trails. It’s easy work, but there’s a lot of it; we could use your help.
Meet at the parking lot across from Ledgeview golf course on top.
Bring gloves and snips,we have garbage bags, etc.

Those who must ride, bring a small garbage bags and carry out some of the garbage.
If time permits, and you’re interested, we may go over to big Sumas and continue the cleanup.

Recap:

This Sunday, FVMBA held a quick trail day up on Ledgeview. The goal was to clear away some of the summer’s overgrowth, and rake leaves from the trails.

Thanks to Deiter for showing up and representing NSMBA - he brought another of NSMBA’s cool tools: A gas-powered hedge trimmer. Now, that’s one cool tool!!!
There’s alot of trails we couldn’t get to, but we did manage to clean up Amy fisher, Mixed bag, parts of Paperroute, and other trails on the north side.

After the rest of the leaves drop, we’ll probably head up again and get it ready for the winter riding season.

Thanks to all that showed up; thanks to Trevor for setting up the tent and barbequing, and thanks FVMBA for the hot dogs, chips and BEER!!!!

I think we need to check our budget and see if there’s room for a power hedgetrimmer.

Recap of the Woodlot trailday

Last Saturday, the Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association (FVMBA) held a trail maintenance and cleanup day at Woodlot 0007. We had between 25 and 30 people show up and it was nice to see people coming from out of town — there were a good number of folks from North Van.

The weather was awesome, and after breaking the large group into smaller groups in the parking area, we moved up Shotgun in procession, cleaning out water drains and dirting up a couple of the jumps and berms that haven’t seen any attention for a few years.

Hoots was next, and we spent a bit of time raking a loose section of rocks and dirting up the lips and transitions of the jumps after the rock face. Gary and his group were working a little higher up, adding soil to a couple of spots on the trail and working a couple corners in the clearcut.

We called it at about 12:00pm, with the intention of giving all the volunteers a chance to get out for a ride in the afternoon.

End-of-day refreshments were provided by Experience Cycling. Thanks guys, and thanks again to everybody who came out and gave up part of their day.

Annual Vedder Mountain Cleanup Day

100 Volunteers Combat a Mountain of Garbage

Sunday April 27 saw the Vedder Mountain Trails Association host the annual Vedder Mountain Trails clean up and trail maintenance day. VMTA representing the interests of Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association, Back Country Horseman of BC, Vedder Running Club, Pacific Northwest Motorcycle Association, and Chilliwack Outdoor Club on Vedder Mountain coordinated the efforts of nearly 100 recreationists to revitalize the well used and well loved trail network.

Individuals from the various user groups lent more than 700 man-hours of volunteer labour to the effort. This yielded 5 metric tonnes of garbage and about 350 man-hours of trail maintenance to improve drainage, reduce the effects of erosion and to augment the sustainability of the trails.

There have been ongoing and disturbing incidences of illegal dumping that continues on Vedder Mountain. The ease of access and proximity to Chilliwack has made this popular recreation area an easy target for this illegal activity. “What is most disturbing about illegal dumping on Vedder Mountain is that the Bailey Road Landfill is only a five minute drive away and provides a legitimate and inexpensive means of disposal”, stated VMTA treasurer Mark Steinebach.

“While continued illegal dumping is discouraging, the enthusiasm and passion shown by the volunteers for this area is overwhelming”, said Steinebach. A broad range of support came from the community and government and this ensured a successful and effective outing. The local Ministry of Tourism, Sport and Arts recreation officer Mike Peters not only provided a large portion of the funding for the event, but also lent a hand with the clean up effort. The Chilliwack Lions Club provided lunch for the volunteers and Valley Tank and Container provided disposal services. Additional support came from the following: Vedder Mountain Trails Association, Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association, Valley Veterinary Services, Jack’s Cycle, NSMB.com, Pinkbike.com, Norco Performance Bikes, Race face, McDonalds Restaurants (Vedder Crossing), Kona Bikes, Raceface, Specialized Bikes, Fox, Camelbak, Powerbar and the City of Chilliwack (Pitch-In Program).

Woodlot trail day : 26 April 2008

For all of you who have been riding the Woodlot this winter, 26 April is the day for you to come out and do some work on the trails. Initially, we planned to do another trail day on Giant Killer to continue the work we started last year but, after thinking about it a bit, we thought it might be better to do a cleanup and some much-needed routine maintenance on the lower trails at the Woodlot.

So next Saturday at 9:30am, bring your shovel or a rake and some work gloves and help us do the routine maintenance that keeps the trails running nicely. This is a great opportunity for people to learn about the easy maintenance they can do on the trails (on their own time).

Trails to see work include:

  • Shotgun
  • Hoots
  • Giant Killer
  • Others, if time allows

Starting time: 9:30am, parking area at the north end of 287th
Location: BCIT Woodlot, park at the north end of 287th in Maple Ridge

If you have any questions, email woodlotbuilders@gmail.com?

Refreshments provided by Experience Cycling.

Sumas - Time Killer Trail Day - Mar 29

Time Killer is being re-born.

The logging that took place on Sumas recently wiped out the Freeway Bob section of TimeKiller. Over the past few weeks, we’ve done alot of work putting the trail back in and now that the trail’s been generally cleared of debris, alot more effort is needed to make it ridable. We need you!

Come on out this weekend for a quick and dirty trail day.
