Rains wreak havoc on Soft Taco and Lost Oakleys

The heavy rains of this past weekend have taken their toll on the trails in the Clayburn area of Abbotsford. “Soft Taco”, which had been undergoing a facelift, has had a large section of the trail washed out by a mudslide. There is a large chasm running across the trail, and is not safe, even on foot. For safety reasons, the trail is closed until further notice.

On “Lost Oakleys”, the ladder bridge which crosses Clayburn Creek just before the exit has washed out again. We are heading in there this Saturday, March 17 to put it back in place, and do a bit of maintenance on the trail. All who are interested are welcome to lend a hand. We’ll be meeting at the exit of Lost Oakleys at around 10 am.

Upgrades to Soft Taco continue

A small but dedicated crew continues to work on upgrading Soft Taco in Clayburn. They’ll be working there this upcoming Saturday, March 3 at 10 am. Anyone who would like to come help out is welcome.

Need directions? E-mail us and we’ll get you sorted.

We will have Wentings’ Trail Bucks to give out to volunteers as well!

Vedder Mountain trail work

This past weekend saw a lot of love put back into the trails at Vedder Mountain in Chilliwack. We had a great turnout of volunteers, 6 on Saturday and 14 on Sunday! Some great work was done on “Hidden Pleasures” to re-route the beginning section of the trail. It is now a lot more fun, and more importantly, much more sustainable. Much was done in the way of drainage and grade reversals to keep water from running down the trail, and we’re quite happy with the result. Work is ongoing further down the trail, if you’re interested in helping send us an email at ride@fvmba.com. Thanks to everyone who came out!

FVMBA trail days in 2007

Dates for Trail Days for 2007 have been decided:

  • Sunday March 25 - Vedder (Jack's Cycle)
  • Saturday April 21 - McKee Peak - lower SOB
  • Sunday May 13 - Bear (Pre-race grooming!!)
  • Sunday June 3 - Sumas
  • Saturday September 15 - Vedder
  • Sunday November 25 - Woodlot (Giant Killer)

Come on out and give a little back to the trails we all ride. We’ve got ‘Trail bucks’ - redeemable at Wentings toward the purchase of whatever cool bike stuff you want.

As we get closer to each date, more details will be announced, both here, NSMB and Pinkbike.

In addition to these ‘formal’ trail dates, there are dedicated groups of builders working on trails on almost any given weekend, and some weekdays. If you want to help - and learn - drop us a line and we’ll hook you up.

Don’t forget the current project of re-working Soft Taco in Clayburn. If you’ve ridden this trail before, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised come spring!!

THanks to all the Bike shops helping out so far:

Wentings in Mission for providing Trail bucks for trail day volunteers. Jacks cycles in Chilliwack for providing a staging area for the Vedder date.

Recap of trail day on Vedder Mountain

FVMBA Vedder mountain trail day went off as planned July 9th. A small, but dedicated group worked primarily on Dilemma, mostly putting dirt on takeoffs and trannys. Fixed a few problem holes also. We also deactivated two reroutes on Hidden Pleasures that were causing erosion and were eye sores.

Thanks to all that turned out.

Recap of the Time Killer trail day

Another trail day on Sumas has come and gone. The time Killer exit was again the target of our labours. The focus was primarily drainage improvements, leveling out low mucky spots, and some new woodwork for an easyout on one of the stunts. We also extracted a tent that had been abandoned as garbage up on Knob Gobbler, and removed a stack of garbage near the TK exit that was left behind as grow-op refuse.

Not as large a turnout as the trail day in March, but every little bit helps. Thanks to the volunteers that showed up; thanks to our sponsors for the swag we handed out.

A special thanks for FVRD Parks!!! Four FVRD Parks Staff came out to assist us with our efforts (and to generally see what we were up to). I’m thinking this is the first step towards a mutually beneficial relationship. Thanks Dave and Crew. (And D. and T. for the authorization)

After the work, we shuttled up to the top (possibly the last time for a while as the lock is being changed) and rode KnobGobbler and TK. A great day all around!!

Unfortunately, I left the camera at home, so no photos.
