Cooperation yields a mountain of garbage

Vedder Mountain Trails Association members representing Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association, Back Country Horseman of BC, Vedder Running Club, Pacific Northwest Motorcycle Associatian, and Chilliwack Outdoor Club cooperated to make the April 9 cleanup day organized by FVMBA reps a complete success.

Individuals from these groups lent more than 700 man-hours of volunteer labour to the effort. This mammoth effort yeilded 2.7 metric tonnes of garbage that did not include metal, tires and other recyclables.

While it is discouraging that we need to continue to bust our humps keeping our playground pristine, the amount of enthusiam applied to this problem was overwhelming. Thank yous must be extended to our local Ministry of Tourism, Sport and Arts recreation representative Brian Radke who generously supplied funding for the dumpsters and landfill fees for a second year. Harvey Adrian from MacDonald's supplied coupons, and Jack's Cycles supplied food, barbequing skills and some swag. There were many, many others that helped in significant ways. You know who you are and your efforts are appreciated.

FVMBA to remove scrapped car on Ledgeview

A wrecked car appeared a couple of years ago on the main access road and has slowly been working its way down the hill, deteriorating and shedding parts.

It’s time to do something about it.

Bring some gloves, and we will push, pull and drag that hulk out of there. We’ve arranged for a flat bed scrapper to take it away after it arrives at the bottom.

Come give something back to this playground we call Ledgeview.

Meet at the North Entrance by the golf course.
Sunday Feb 19th 10-12

Recreational User Groups “Clean House” on Vedder Mountain

This message was received from Mark Steinebach. Keep up the good work out there!

Sunday, March 20 saw several different groups of recreational users come together to put their collective back’s into cleaning up Vedder Mountain. Every year the dirt bike, trail running, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking groups have organized their own “trail days” to deal with the illegal dumping abuses that are reeked upon this area that we love so much. This year the various groups co-ordinated their focus. The result was a cumulative effort that yielded some 500 man hours of volunteer labour of which the mountain bike community contributed nearly half.

Two mega-dumpsters of garbage were removed from the roadways and embankments of Vedder Mountain, and piles of berms were added to the trails to improve that flowy feeling. A ton of general trail maintenance occurred. Following this trail ‘love-in’ the troops met back at Jack’s Cycle for eats. Swag flowed to the regiment and then it was off to enjoy mass trail riding. We went home muddy, tired and smiling.

The day was all good and props have to go out to the following good folks that helped to make this day go off by the donation of goods, food, money or effort:

  • Kona
  • Norco Performance Bikes
  • Jack’s Cycle
  • Ryders Eyewear
  • Save-on-Foods (Sardis)
  • McDonald’s (Sardis)
  • Dairy Queen
  • FVMBA
  • NSMB
  • Pinkbike
  • Alpine Valley Disposal Ltd
  • City of Chilliwack
  • Ministry of Forests (Chilliwack District)

Lost Oakleys bridge repair

We are going to need 10 to 12 people to come out on Saturday, February 26th at noon to the Lost Oakleys trail to repair the bridge. It was washed down-stream earlier this spring, and we need to place it back in the right spot and re-attach it. The bonus is you have to ride the entire trail to get to the bridge! The trail starts on McKee road on the Western edge of Ledgeview Golf Course.

Hope to see you there!
